Montepulciano lies on a hill from which you can let your eyes wander and enjoy a brethtaking view on the Orcia valley on one side and the Chiana valley and Trasimeno lake on the other. Called the pearl of the 1500 because of its beautiful Renaissance palaces on the main street, its heart is the Piazza Grande, on the peak of the hill, former acropolis now framed by the most significant and remarkable monuments, such as the impressive Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. A great red wine is aged in the many cellars in town, the outstanding Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, whose origins date back to the 14th century.
