A walk of art in the Crete

full day - difficulty level: easy
visit to the Monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore

The walk starts from the lovely village of San Giovanni d’Asso, known for its white truffles and the first museum in Europe dedicated to this delicacy. Along dirt roads overlooking the impressive and dramatic landscape of the Crete (clay hills), we reach the Monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, founded in 1313 by Saint Bernardo Tolomei.

Here we visit the church and the superb central cloister, to enjoy the colorful 1500’s frescoes painted by Sodoma and Luca Signorelli, describing episodes of the life of Saint Benedict.
